Epson Gardunha
Biodiversity Initiative

The Challenge

The breathtaking mountain scenery and rich natural heritage of Fundão, central Portugal were devastated by severe forest fires in 2003 and 2005.  The Epson Gardunha Biodiversity Initiative is attempting to restore the traditional landscape, wildlife and culture of this remote wilderness.

The partnership

We have a strong and committed partnership lead by Epson, the imaging technology company, alongside other partner organizations such as the Gardunha Verde, Municipality of Fundão, SPEA, Pinus Verde and Gardunha21.  All of us, as partners, are actively involved in work to regenerate and protect the biodiversity of the Serra da Gardunha.

The process

The first phase of the project is focused on re-establishing sustainable mountain forests in Fundão. For generations they have supported the lifestyle, identity and ecosystem of the Serra da Gardunha.  Following the regeneration of this habitat we look forward to gradually returning the mammals, birds, insects, reptiles, amphibians and fish of the region to the area.

We hope eventually to develop the site, which is already on Portugal’s national list of ‘sites of community importance’ in the Natura 2000 network, into an Important Bird Area (IBA).

Broadleaf trees, such as Chestnut, Oak and Cork Oak, are being planted alongside rarer local species like the Asphodelus bento-rainhae.  Mixed planting creates the best habitat for wildlife and the most sustainable forest, but only sponsored projects such as ours can use this technique as it is not commercially viable.

Scientific research and expertise will underpin all of our activities.  Project sites will be scrupulously selected following studies by biologists, forest engineers and ornithologists. A comprehensive biodiversity baseline audit will be performed to map the existing biodiversity and serve as a benchmark to measure the project’s progress.  To limit the risk of future fires Epson Gardunha Biodiversity Initiative will implement forest management measures including fire barriers and monitoring.

Why?

The Epson Gardunha Biodiversity Initiative forms part of Epson’s Environmental Vision 2050: a wide ranging environmental commitment that also includes reducing the company’s entire CO2 emissions by 90% by 2050.
